Thank you to the 2023 SDSU Tour Group for inviting me to be your tour guide last week. It was a pleasure and an honour to share New Zealand with you (apart from all the rain).

 Throughout the tour, I witnessed your enthusiasm and genuine interest in learning about New Zealand and our primary sector. Your thoughtful questions and insightful comments enriched the discussions. The positive energy and camaraderie within the group also made the experience memorable for everyone involved.

 I hope the knowledge and insights gained from your trip here will continue to inspire and guide you in your agricultural journeys.

 Thanks must go to Dr Julie Walker who without her dedication these tours would not happen.  You arrived in NZ well set up to make the most of the trip which was just awesome.  Thanks Julie.

  Cows being milked at the dairy. Today was our last day in New Zealand. We started our morning by going to Align Farms. Align Farms is an award-winning dairy located between two rivers in Mid-Canterbury. Align Farms Hasten-farms located in the South Island. The Mid-Canterbury site that we visited was 290 hectares and had around 5,000 cows. The farm is split into two 148 hectares groups. One of the groups is farmed conventionally while the other group is farmed in a regenerative manner. W e were given a tour of the property. Our tour guide’s name was Rhys Roberts. On the tour of the Align farm we were taken to a small garden, a couple of pastures, and the milking barn. At the garden we got an overview of what produce they grow. They grow tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, and more. At the pastures we were shown the differences of a grazed pasture vs a non-grazed pasture. Blog Post Day 1 May 7-8:           We began our experience together by waiting at Chicago airport Sunday evening. Our group arrived from Denver, Omaha, Sioux Falls, and Minneapolis, and one met us in Chicago. The takeoff was delayed about an hour because of some weather around us. This created a backup of takeoffs and arrivals. Then we settled in for the 16.5-hour flight. We were served dinner and breakfast and the beginning and end of our flight. In between, we watched shows, played games, read books, and slept. We crossed over the International Dateline sometime during the night and lost May 8 th .   First views of New Zealand from the plane May 9: At about 6:50 AM local time we landed in New Zealand. It took us about an hour to get through customs and immigration, and another few minutes to exchange currency. Then we met our tour guides and bus driver, Chris Bristol, Kate Spencer, and Chris. Donkey that The Tin Shed had behind their shop in the petting zoo. We started out our day at 8:30 a.m. where we headed out of Ashburton to the Tin Shed. The Tin Shed is a luxury wool shop that sells a variety of wool products ranging from men’s and women’s quality sweaters, coats, vests, pants, socks, gloves, and hats, just to name a few. They even sell kids clothing, baby blankets, and baby shoes.  The Tin Shed where we were able to purchase high quality wool products. In this shop you can find household items such as sheep pelts and wool blankets. The wool to make these products come from merino sheep, alpacas, and possums. When you are not shopping inside the Tin Shed, they have several farm animals that they have housed in a petting zoo type setting. Many students spent time visiting with their donkey, alpacas, sheep, and pot belly pigs. Geraldine Cheese Company where we got our ice cream.
